The last year has seen comedians, writers and creators drag themselves through serial lockdowns, power through the closure of comedy clubs, restrictions on shoots and touring, and the low level panic underlying, well, everything to make sure we still managed a few laughs in an exceptionally tough time. 

So we welcome any celebration. Especially one that spotlights one of our own comedy warriors on a global stage. Vir Das just made it to Variety magazine’s Comedy Impact Report that seeks to celebrate the champions who helped us keep our sh*t together when everything else was falling apart. 

This list of 35 comedians, writers, creators and agents features some of the biggest names in comedy including Dave Chappelle, Sacha Baron Cohen, Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Tiffany Haddish, Eric Andre and Bo Burnham. Das earned himself a spot for his 10-part YouTube series Ten On Ten. We couldn’t be more proud.

Last year, Indian comedian Das’ Zoom special featured his crowd work as he chatted with fans all over the globe. This year, he’s shifted gears with “Ten on Ten,” recorded before a small crowd hidden in a forest. “It’s 10 hard conversations, about topics that are hard to laugh at and hard to do within system I exist in,” he says. Das could be persecuted for joking about religion, freedom of speech and tribalism, but he won’t stop. “If I’m carrying my own speakers and microphone up a hill in a forest during a pandemic it better not be for jokes about airplane food,” he says. “I’m not thinking about the government response. Being in the jungle has set me free.”
