On his debut special The IIT Dream Madhur Virli proved his mettle as a sound storyteller and comedian, taking his penchant for tackling minefield topics to a whole new level. We had seen him touch upon some discomfiting subjects previously, when the comedian had first broke into the YouTube scene. But since then, the comedian had levelled up considerably and that was on full display on the special.
After the success of The IIT Dream, Virli wants to keep the momentum going and is heading out on the road with his latest show Kaam Challa. He was pretty secretive about the material he’s performing but going by his track record, it’s safe to say it isn’t going to be about rainbows and unicorns. With a 12-city tour kicking off today in Delhi, we caught up with the comedian to know more about the hour, where his head is at and what he’s listening to currently. He’s also given a shoutout to a pretty underrated comedian. Read on to find out!
Quick! What’s the show about?
This show is different from my previous special The IIT Dream. There isn’t one whole story. There are two major bits of around 20-25 minutes aur special unke around revolve karta hain. In both these bits I touch upon certain things that I feel should be talked about but they aren’t talked about currently.
How many shows are you doing, across how many cities?
Currently I’m doing 20-22 shows across 12 cities.
How long did you spend writing the show?
Basically, IIT Dream release karte hi maine yeh solo start kar diya tha. At that point I was still figuring out what I want the show to be about. So, I had five to seven bits that I was writing and I used to perform something from that depending on uss din kya mood hai. Finally I closed on these two bits. So, I think I wrote this in around 5 months.
Will you be recording this material?
Yes yes! I will be recording this material in December. And I’ll try to release it in the first or second week of January. Once that is done I’ll go back to the other bits I had and start working on that.
Why should we watch it live?
Iska toh koi answer nahi hai because I will release it on YouTube anyway. But when you watch it live you’ll get to hear the entry and exit music, I work a lot on that as well. (laughs)
According to you, who would be the ideal plus-one to bring for this show?
I don’t have an ideal one but I know who you shouldn’t come with. Galti se bhi family ke saath mat aa jana. Parents will be worst, siblings will also be weird only. Baaki boys gang, girls gang, couples, inke liye perfect hai.
Why are you calling the show ‘Kaam Challa’?
Basically “kaam chal raha hai” ka matlab hota hai “work in progress”. So when I was doing the trial shows I decided on this name. The idea was that till the recording isn’t done, I’ll be constantly working on it anyway. So I thought I’ll keep the same name for the special.
On a scale of 1-wtfamidoing, how nervous are you?
I wouldn’t say I’m nervous. I’m always exited to do a new show, trying out new angles and jokes. I’m also performing in some auditoriums for the first time so I’m very excited for that too!
If you could give a shoutout to one comedian you’ve seen recently, who would it be?
Ek naya comedian hai Anubhav Singh Bassi kar ke. I’ve recently discovered him (laughs). Unko shoutout dena chahunga. If you haven’t watched his videos please give them a watch. I think he’s very underrated.
A song you have on repeat currently?
Namuna by Seedhe Maut.
