A standup comedian performs at a fashion show. That’s not the setup for a joke. It’s something that actually happened this week. Comedian Sumukhi Suresh opened for Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla’s Asal and Mard showcase at the India Couture Week—a bi-annual fashion week organised and promoted by the Fashion Design Council of India—in Delhi on 24 July with a performance of her latest show Hoemonal. Yesterday, she put up a post on Instagram showing off her glamorous look at the prestigious fashion event.

“Sandeep- I loved Hoemonal. I want you to open for my show in Delhi.
Sumukhi- (laughs) Me in a fashion show?” she wrote in the caption.

The comedian’s performance marks the first time an Indian comic has performed at India Couture Week. Gone are the days when comedians were associated with baggy shorts and t-shirts with yesterday’s dal stains. It’s time for everyone to suit up and show off that drip. Who knows? Maybe they’ll even walk the ramp soon.
