Spread the love

While everyone around us has embarked on their journey of self-discovery and improvement, here we are, scrambling to get out of bed and face the first Monday of 2023. Thousands of “new year, new me” posts and stories later, we decided it was time to be a little productive. Just so that we don’t feel too guilty about breaking our resolution of not being frivolous with money within the first 24 hours. Yes, I’m looking at you, extremely expensive and overrated cup of Starbucks.

So, to kick things off here’s the first DA Weekly Roundup of 2023. Because, you know… people may or may not become the 2.0 version they are hoping for, but we have a pretty good feeling that Indian standup will level up once again. Here’s a little dose of what’s to come!

1. Ramya Ramapriya – Sexual Compliments

It had been a minute since we saw any activity on Ramya Ramapriya’s YouTube channel. The Comicstaan season 2 contestant, last appeared on Amazon Prime Video’s Standup Shorts, with a tight 15-minute set. After a year-long digital hiatus, we’ve finally got some new material from Ramapriya.

Indian parents are a goldmine of vague, open-ended life advice. In her new clip, Ramapriya lets us in on some gems that her mom has dished out over the years. Gems that live rent-free in her head. Basically like the generic horoscope predictions that could be applicable to any life situation (doesn’t really matter if you’re a Taurus or a Gemini, it’s honestly all the same). There’s also a tutorial on appreciating male genitalia and giving socially acceptable sexual compliments in 2022.

2. Anubhav Singh Bassi – Hostel (Bloopers)

It’s been almost three years since Anubhav Singh Bassi put up the second-most-viewed video up on his channel titled Hostel. With meme-worthy moments such as, “Koi sense hai iss baat ki?” and “Bohot zyada”, this video has become a rite of passage for anybody who wants to enter the Indian standup fandom. But that’s not it. After all these years, it proves to be a gift that keeps on giving. A second part of the video’s blooper reel was uploaded to Bassi’s second channel, be_a_bassi last week. Enjoy the bonus footage now!

3. Vrinda Bhagchandani – Expensive Restaurants and Chefs

To all those boys who complain about “female comedians only doing jokes about bobs, period and vagene” (Go watch the Urooj Ashfaq clip if you haven’t already!), this one is for you. In her second YouTube video, Vrinda Bhagchandani is all about restaurants. How do you identify an expensive restaurant? Is “acquired taste” one of the biggest scams in the culinary industry? And how does the feedback loop function in a cafe? Bhagchandani has got it all down in her new video!

4. Mohd Suhel – ABHI MUMBAI DUR HAI?!

Mohd Suhel is clearly a fan of the famous adage, “Practice makes perfect.” The comedian is probably the busiest bee in the live circuit right now, hitting up mics almost every other day of the week. It would probably be a daily affair had he not lived in Navi Mumbai, our city’s weird cousin who the parents force you to play with. And that’s precisely what Suhel is talking about in his newest clip. The place you live in must be especially far when you’re getting yelled at by Uber drivers and getting real estate advice from autowalas. Check it out for yourself!

Jeeveshu Ahluwalia – Yeh Kya Kar Raha Hain?

Jeeveshu Ahluwalia’s latest release on YouTube came out over the weekend. And it was a fitting goodbye to 2022. In the new 10-minute banger, we become privy to Ahluwalia’s relationship with his wife before marriage. A family that probably follows Akshay Kumar’s fitness routine because… well, how many grandmothers are living to 104 years old? Either that or as Ahluwalia suspects, she might be a djinn. Regardless, the comedian has coined the perfect term for the supreme being. Check out the entire video to hear about their “small and intimate” 950-people wedding.
